Alpan International 2007
London-based emerging artist Odette England is one of twelve to be selected for Alpan International 2007. A juried selection process leading to a non-commission exhibition with $1000 Award for Best in Show, it attracted almost 300 entries from the US, Belgium, Canada, China, Croatia, Netherlands, Poland and UK were received this year. The exhibition will run from September 1-27 with the Best in Show award to be determined by the jury after the shows installation.
The only UK representative to be selected, she will show work from her ongoing series, The Farm. The work is anthropological in nature, based on a journey of self-exploration of absent presence. She revisited her childhood home in Southern Australia and described it using her mothers snapshots and captions as the reference. The new images suggest reproductions of a past that shows only traces of how it is remembered, thus questioning the impact of resemblance, erosion and circumstance.
Odette England is a 2007 graduate from City of Westminster Colleges HNC in Photography course and is showing until 25 June in Free Range at Old Truman Brewery. Work from The Farm will also be showcased in the group exhibition A Great Awakening at Rhonda Schaller Studio New York 14 July 4 August.
