Mobile exhibition

As part of Design Event ‘07, Inspire is coordinating a mobile design exhibition; ‘READesign’ in collaboration with The Keelrow Bookshop in North Shields.

The mobile exhibition will be housed and transported in a removal van the concept originated from the mobile library model. Artists Fiona Thompson, Michael Armstrong and Ellen Bell have been commissioned to design three iconic domestic items including a teapot, coffee table and dress for 2007. Artist/designer Lindsay Duncanson working in lighting and projection will be responsible for translating imagery from the books and projecting it onto the objects. It is intended that by projecting historical images onto contemporary objects, these will visually express the history that has been absorbed by contemporary makers and influenced the type of work they make today and demonstrate how the way we lived in a domestic space in the past has influenced the way we live now.

READesign is managed and curated by designer Charlie Arnold. An independent store newly opened, Keelrow Bookshop contains a substantial collection of antique design books that will be researched for British domestic iconic items of the town’s past.

Inspire is the South East Northumberland Public Art & Design Initiative, set up in 2003 to improve the built and natural environment through the involvement of artists and advocating quality design. The aim is to change negative perceptions, make a contemporary environment and raise aspirations for the future. It has been created through a partnership of Wansbeck District Council, Blyth Valley Borough Council and Northumberland County Council, South East Northumberland and North Tyneside Regeneration Initiative (SENNTRi) and Northumberland Groundwork Trust with support from Commissions North and Northern Architecture.
