Part of Deptford X 2007

Katie Gilman has created a temporary public work for the Deptford X festival, by transforming an existing landmark. She has meticulously wrapped a huge metal anchor – permanently sited as a reminder of the area’s history– in fluffy pink wool.

“The Anchor in Deptford stands as a much loved landmark and community meeting point and links Deptford’s naval heritage with the busy street market of the present-day.”

The intervention is part of the Deptford X programme of exhibitions and events, for which the focus this year is on ‘transforming objects and spaces’. The festival publicly celebrates and showcases the wealth of talent in Deptford’s creative community. The MacDonald Egan Award, Core programme, Invited projects, Open studios, Gallery events, and an Education Programme continue until 16 September.
