Study award
Artist Carole Waller from Bath has been awarded a £5,000 Queen Elizabeth Scholarship which will enable a years intensive study of glass painting and enamelling and research trips to Germany. These are designed to widen her artistic scope, extending the range of her work with large scale glass commissions.
A successful textile artist who makes large-scale paintings on unprimed fabrics for exhibitions and to commission, Waller has exhibited internationally since 1986 and creates installations for hospitals, art centres, schools and private collections. Some works are held in the V&As costume collection. Her first work in glass arose from an outdoor installation for the Art of the Garden exhibition at Westonbirt Arboretum. Winning a QEST Scholarship means the artist can study the practical skills of glass painting at the Baroque Glass Centre in Nailsworth and take an advanced course in coloured enamels at the Centre for Fine Print Research, at University of the West of England, Bristol. She will also spend ten days in Germany visiting the Derix studio in Frankfurt, Otto Peters studio in Paderborn which specialises in screen printing on glass, and the glass museum in Linnich.
The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) awards scholarships twice a year. Since 1991 the Trust has made cash awards worth over £1,000,000 to 174 craftspeople. The autumn 2007 round made seven awards totalling £50,800.
The scholarships and next deadline for applications will be advertised on this website shortly.
