Inaugural Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary awarded to Noëmi Lakmaier

Austrian-born artist Noëmi Lakmaier has been selected from an open submission as the first recipient of the Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary. She receives £5000 and an artist residency at Camden Arts Centre between March and April 2008.

The bursary and the associated residency will give Noëmi the time and freedom to explore issues raised in her most recent installation/ performance object ‘Exercise in Losing Control’ and to develop the work further. Commenting on the bursary, the artist said: “It will give me the invaluable opportunity to focus on my work and to pursue my ideas in an experimental way, without the pressure of needing to achieve a predetermined outcome.”

“I want to use this time to create more refined ‘performance objects’ exploring the ‘weeble’ and possibly also other kinetic children’s toys. I want to look beyond the physically grotesque of forcing my body into disproportionately small objects and focus on a new body of work investigating the underlying issues of my fear of losing control, and feelings towards my own body as a woman and a disabled person.”

The Adam Reynolds Bursary is organised by Shape, in memory of Adam Reynolds, a renowned sculptor and an activist for disability equality and a past Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The bursary reflects Adam’s spirit of support and extends his legacy of providing unfettered opportunity to extend personal creativity in a supportive environment. It will be offered on an annual basis, linked to a residency in a new venue each year.
