Andrew Bryant's biography
Andrew Bryant is Online Editor for Artists talking. Since graduating in 1996 he has been a freelance photographer, workshop leader and teacher. His most recent position was Head of Photography at Camden School for Girls. He has now left teaching to focus on his work and his writing.
For the past fifteen years I have worked exclusively in photography but this is beginning to change as I search for new ways to inhabit my project. My recent notebooks and experiments reflect a growing interest in performance, installation and video, demonstrating my desire for a more embodied experience and one that is not restricted by static, two-dimensional representation.
Themes of limitation, lack and constraint reoccur, as do masculinity, death and transformation. Structuralism informs my work, particularly the insertion of the individual into the symbolic order and the loss of integration or gap this produces. My influences are wide ranging and include Christian Boltanski, Jo Spence, Bruce Nauman and Nikki S. Lee.
