Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing
By: Stephen Hackett
After studying at the art college in Belfast, I joined Catalyst Arts (an artist-run organisation based in the city) where I was co-director for two years.
The organisation is very open ended in terms of its programme and for me this meant looking outside of the gallery space. While I worked there I organised a newspaper publication, Cartography: the City, Kokomo Manifesto, collaborations between electro-acoustic musicians and video artists, along with many other events and exhibitions.
I am now co-director of organisations that I helped form, Cinilingus and Factotum. Cinilingus is a film and video organisation that programmes site-specific screenings and events throughout Belfast. Amongst other things we have organised illegal screenings underneath motorway flyovers and other outdoor locations, and 'Advertence' a festival of experimental approaches to documentary film. We also programme within the Belfast Film Festival. Future ventures include an Indian contemporary film programme and a series of music documentary screenings.
Factotum? Well I'm not too sure, we don't have a scheme as such, so far its a mixture of 'Peeping Tomism' What's he building in there? a series of tours through Belfast's hidden organisations, contemporary dance events and investigations into criminality in the nineteenth century. Future projects that I'm working on will include 'Belfast songs', a remix project and an analytical publication on dubious lyrics about Belfast through the ages.
I find defining my own practice difficult, I wouldn't say I'm a curator or organiser of cultural events, although my practice tends to feed into this line of work. I prefer to work in collaboration with others on various projects, within these I would be involved in aspects of design, editing, writing, photography and audio mixing. Broadly it's about working within different mediums and situations for creating and enabling work.
