Stanford Junior Residency

By: Angela Carter

I have received £11,000 from Arts Council England to lead a residency at a school in Brighton. I am working with six teachers, both individually to create a body of their own work and with their classes to help them increase their confidence in art. The school will become an interactive Open House during the Brighton Festival where we will run workshops with the public to produce a cardboard installation.

I am a Brighton-based artist working in a range of media; I originally trained in plastics, making sculptural pieces from wet resins and now use materials such as plaster, paint and clay. Drawing is an important foundation to my ideas. The pieces I create are tactile and abstract, leaving suggestions of memories and distant relationships.

Aside from exhibiting, I lead art workshops and residencies with museums, galleries and schools. My work is based on how people communicate and interact, and by engaging with the community to broaden perspectives and knowledge, I gain valuable experiences which inform my personal work.
