Visual art exhibitions and events with a platform for critical writing
By: Joe Tymkow
I'm about to start my final year in September and had to submit a dissertation proposal; largely an admin exercise so that I could be assigned relevant tutors, lectures and tutorials.
I chose an inspired title - 'Is it possible to earn my living as an artist?', but it was rejected on the grounds that its too practical, not enough theory!
I am examining the interactivity that occurs between differing mediums, focussing on surface, colour and texture. The behaviour of materials is fascinating as I watch a painting change and develop before my eyes.
I am not intimidated by a blank canvas, I see it as an invitation to proceed. My work is a back-to-basics exploration of the painting process itself.

Ideally I would like to combine my dissertation with my final years body of work, making one relevant/pertinent to the other so they can feed each other - flip back and forth, but as I am currently process-painting its difficult trying to find a way of producing a suitable theory-based essay that bears any relevance. Any advice or suggestions would be more than welcome.
