Re:::lay

By: Sorrel Muggridge

This blog will document the process and developments of: Re:::lay

A collaborative project by Sorrel Muggridge (uk) and Laura Nanni(Canada)

# 2 [3 November 2008]

I was really keen to start a blog here at AN as I think its a really interesting new resource, but i must confess, as it is probably perfectly apparent,  The development of the Re:::lay performances over this month and our own blog covering the process has consumed all of our time.

This project has taken us to new territory both geographically and creatively.  This phase of Re:::lay has produce three unique performance walks in 6 locations across the UK.

The performance walks took place one -to- one, with a wider incidental audience in the locations where each performance took place  and an online audience on the blog where this work is being documented. The focus of Re:::lay has been on long distance relationships and as such the blog has been a key element in this work. It is a place that offers an audience from further afield opportunities to follow the development of the project but also to participate.  The Blog Projects are tasks devised in response to our experiences in making Re:::lay that enable people from anywhere to share in the work.

The opportunity and experience of performing and devising these walks has been fascinating. Each performance has challenged us in our devising processes and inspired us to ask more questions about the role of walking in our artistic practice. I am sorry i have not been able to use this blog space as i had envisaged but take a look at our other blog to see more about the project and its evolution.

# 1 [10 October 2008]

Re:::lay, is a new art project exploring the nature of long-distance relationships.  Over the course of October 2008 we are developing the first phase of this piece, we will work one-to-one with pairs of individuals to create journeys that are specific to their relationships, location and the distance between them.

Developments in communications technology and travel have made us able to meet, move and connect over huge distances, but how has this distance affected our relationships and our sense of place?  Is our perception of distance changing?

we are just begining our research on the ground having found our first three pairs to work with. tomorrow Laura embarks on her first reseach trip to Edinburgh whilst i explore Nottingham

Sorrel Muggridge

We (Sorrel Muggridge and Laura Nanni ) have been collaborating long-distance (usually with an ocean between us) for the last two years; with works being shown in Nottingham, UK as well as Toronto and Banff, Canada. Our works embrace the unusual and inspiring consequences of the distance between us. We make site-specific artworks that articulate the value in wandering and being curious, that discover and communicate a sense of place; investigating how people understand and connect with their surroundings.
Site-specific walks provide the basis for our performance and installation works that capture this dynamic perspective of place.
