About cookies
Cookies are small pieces of information that on request from a website are stored by your computer on your computer's hard disk. Cookies are used by websites to keep track of the user in some way. This can be used for both innocuous and intrusive purposes. Modern browsers all have functions that can control cookies.
How does a-n use cookies?
Cookies used by a-n's web site are not intrusive - they gather no information about you or your computer. We use four cookies:
- When you open www.a-n.co.uk and your cookie settings in your browser permit the service we employ to count the number of people you visit our site will store on your computer a cookie from c3.counter.com. This is a session cookie and will disappear as soon as you quit your browser. The counter service identifies each visitor to the home page. The purpose of the cookie is to prevent you from being re-counted if you return to the home page after first launching the site. If you restrict this cookie it will not effect your use of the site in any way.
- If you are a subscriber and log in to www.a-n.co.uk another cookie (anlogin) is stored on your site. This is used to check whether you are authorised to access subscriber only pages. If you don't have this cookie you won't get access to the subscriber only pages. If you do you will. If you are a subscriber you will need to ensure that your cookie settings allow cookies to be sent from the site.
- If login to one of our interactive toolkits (either by transferring as a logged on subscriber from the www.a-n.co.uk site or by directly logging in) you will receive two more cookies. These are from our www.itool.co.uk site. One (_ziToolkitvis) checks whether you have registered and allows you to save and uniquely retrieve data you have entered. The other (ziToolkitTutID) identifies which toolkit you are working on. Both expire within a twenty minutes of inactivity in the site or when you logout. You will not be able to use the interactive toolkits if your browser is set to block cookies from the site.
- If you logon to one of our a-n unedited services a further cookie is used. This is from our site www.a-nunedited.co.uk and is used again to check if your have registered and allows you to save and uniquely retrieve data you have entered. It expires after twenty minutes of inactivity in the site or when you logout. You will not be able to submit articles to any of the unedited services unless your browser is set to block cookies from the site.
Cookies may change as the sites are developed.
