Translucent time capsules capture these moments; they are imprisoned in blocks of wax where they fossilise, make imprints on the wax and tangle into each other; a narrative of events, people, time and thoughts. Gathered as memories in our minds, to keep and treasure.   There exists a disease that can unravel this process; its power is to unpick these memories, to slowly erase at random the faces, the places and moments in time that we have held onto. Through Alzheimer’s the memory undergoes a dissection that we are incapable of, there are things I wish I could forget and things I want to keep forever, but this disease has no mercy. I will only remember what it allows me to. This work is a response to memory; how I have witnessed my Grandfather’s attempts to hold on to memories that Alzheimer’s threatens to take away; how I struggle to remember a face that once meant the world to me; how an item, an image or a word can resuscitate an emotion and how I can forget the things that I have loved but am haunted by events that I wish I could take away. ... Ajaykumar’s generative internet artwork iPak – 10,000 songs, 10,000 images, 10,000 abuses, initially developed with the support of an Artsadmin Digital Media bursary was launched online in March 2008. iPak is a playful, inter-active and participatory art work, that integrates the participants’ creativity, the random generation of works by a computer, and art engendered by Ajaykumar. At Artsadmin, the work will be presented by the artist, followed by a discussion touching on the issues raised through iPak: conceptual innovation, social engagement and therapeutic process; generative art as re-generative force; art-making as medicine; inspiration emerging from tragedy; and the notion that social factors – such as marginalisation and racism – cause mental illness. ... Through a process of experimentation she investigates how an action or object relates to the sound it makes and how that alters when mediated, exploring the literal and physical limitations of the reproduction. The technology not only documents the enquiry but also becomes part of the work. Although serious in her approach the work often has a playfulness and sometimes absurdity to it, it manifests as installations, sculpture objects, performances and videos. Lorrice Douglas will hold an open studio at Toynbee Studios, providing an opportunity for the public to see current work in progress and previously unseen images. Lorrice works across a range of media and her background in sculpture informs her ideas on composition, lighting and physical space.
