'Lost industrial Teesside Communities' by Derek Smith The project began in 1971, when Smith was sixteen years old and continued into the mid 1970s, developing into an extensive body of work documenting the communities that had grown up around the huge iron and steel works of the region. Among the pubs, clubs and streets Smith found often difficult working lives and hardship, but also rich expressions of solidarity, compassion and a stoical sense of humour. As an insider to these communities, whose family had worked and lived in Thornaby since the early 1900s, Smith was well placed to portray them without sentimentality or judgment but with dignity, curiosity and respect. Today, following de-industrialisation of the region, many of these once thriving working class communities have been lost from the national map and have been forgotten. In this light, Smith’s recently rediscovered negatives provide a fascinating and thought-provoking insight into the culture and living conditions of a section of the North East in the 1970s. Many of the images are being shown for the first time in this exhibition.

Commonplace images of nature, usually looked through rather than at, are forced into view in large digital and silk-screen textile prints. Within these un-romanticised scenes of summer and winter, taken from around the periphery of Gladstone Park, the viewer is invited to peer into tiny staged worlds depicting a shared fantasy, a desire for an idealised nature.

New Media Scotland is proud to announce the extension of the documentary oral history project [murmur] in Leith. Several new stories have now been added to the project and which has just been granted permission to extend until 2009 by Edinburgh City Council. Now that spring is on the way why not go for a walk in Leith with your mobile phone and keep an eye out for the distinctive green, ear-shaped signs. New signs have been added on Coburg Street, in front of Dalmeny Park, and Admiralty Street. [murmur] Edinburgh began in 2006 when the [murmur] project team collected people's personal histories about the places in Leith which were important to them. In each of these locations, a [murmur] sign was installed with a telephone number on it. Passers-by can use their mobile phones to listen to stories while engaging in the physical experience of being right where the stories took place.

When Scott reached the south pole the first thing he saw was Amundsen's Black flag. "Bugger" he said and headed home. The rest is history. This game revives that moment. The rules are simple. Take a black flack go somewhere and as long as there are no other flags in sight, plant it. Hang around and watch the disappointment of others when they arrive second. Admittedly at first the game will be easy but soon flags will cover the globe and things will get interesting. Possibly, but probably not the first Face Book based artwork. The game will run for ten years and participants can upload photographs, discuss adventures and invite friends to join in.

Spacex is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Finnish artist Axel Antas. The exhibition will consist of a new body of work including film, large scale drawings and a series of photographs taken in the harsh and vast Catalan Pyrenees. These pieces will be shown alongside a selection of earlier works from Antas’ Intervention series in which images of low lying mist and clouds hover in park landscapes. In these works the artist momentarily tampers with nature, changing the landscape for a fragile minute and capturing the event on film.
