A new exhibition by Paul Bloomer, a Shetland based artist, opens at Grampian Hospitals Arts Trust’s Art Gallery in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Paul is originally from the Midlands and trained at the Royal Academy of Art in London and mainly exhibits and sells in London. Eleven years ago Paul discovered the Shetland islands and was so entranced by the ever changing light and that he moved to the Shetlands and has been practicing as an artist there ever since. Paul’s work explores themes such as freedom, growth and rebirth and he works directly from nature. His work is a myriad of colours and shapes and features landscapes, birds, and sunsets.

At the Downland Art Society's autumn exhibition, you will find many original works at very reasonable prices, and whether framed or unframed, oils, acrylics, watercolours, pastels, or charcoal - the choice is yours.It may be an abstract or a representational picture, either way it is sure to turn out to become a much-cherished piece of artwork.The Downland is one of the longest established and largest art societies in West Sussex. However, being one of the oldest doesn't mean it lives in the past, as it is one of the few art societies in West Sussex to have its own website, and in addition, is probably the only one where the members benefit from demonstrations enhanced by digitally projected images on screen and audio presentations, ensuring even those at the back of the room can see and hear what is going on at the front. Lesley Halliwell resurrects the 1970’s children’s favourite, the Spirograph, creating ragged, dizzy, psychedelic and beautifully pointless pen drawings. Halliwell transforms the ready-made format of the Spirograph and everyday biro pens into large scale colourful works which gently hover between a playfulness that we all recognise and a sophistication that comes from her focused and obsessive application.

Jongha Park is a Korean artist usually based in Korea, but whose works are gaining an increasing international reputation. He is also a Visiting Professor of Fine Art in Beijing, and has exhibited his works in Korea, China, Germany, France, and the UK. In looking at the work of Jongha Park, one cannot help but be reminded of genetic code, or of books on library shelves, of the calligrapher's brushstrokes, or of bamboo stalks.Interestingly enough, these are all carriers of information.And the work too, also conveys its information simply and clearly.

Over the past four years, Fairfields has exhibited quite a lot of fashion and textile design, usually as part of our 'New Contemporaries' Show.This year we are going further, and we are organising this one exhibition specifically dedicated to fashion. And in it we will particularly be focusing on showing work by new young fashion designers.To accompany Fairfields Fashion Show we will also be having a small exhibition of hand-made jewellery by keiko Tilly was born in Japan. She creates her jewellery using gemstone beads that are sourced from all over the world, and her work is sold in many galleries across the UK.

Uriel Orlow’s new multi-media installation uses video, photography, drawing and text to investigate where history, place and memory intersect and resonate in the present. His starting point is the famous art nouveau Café Odeon, Zürich, a central stage for the high dramas of European intellectual life and politics for much of the first half of the 20th century. Orlow muses over the café’s architecture and its history as a meeting place for émigrés during World Wars One and Two. Here, Lenin, Joyce, the Dadaists and many more, consumed coffee, pâtisserie and the latest news. Orlow’s work traces history’s imprint so that we may see its living continuity. Concerned with personal and collective experience, he explores how we classify, categorise and absorb knowledge, both intellectually and physically. 2008 exhibitions include The Jewish Museum, New York and Blancpain Art Contemporain, Geneva. Recent UK group exhibitions and screenings include ICA, BFI, Whitechapel, Arnolfini, as well as in Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium and Bosnia. On the edge of the outer industrial zone of Reggio Emilia, Italy, an abandoned building appears to contain nothing more than a random scattering of items; beds, armchairs, cookers, tiles, broken doors, clothes etc. On closer inspection, it seems the space has been subtly transformed by ‘migrant workers’ as a place to live, with distinct areas for play and communal life. Dimora, meaning dwelling or residence, the title of Tallentire’s powerful yet understated photographic series, looks at how objects in this space are carefully arranged to create a functioning social arena, workspace or decoy. Tallentire’s recent work has focused on spaces and activities associated with apparently mundane yet essential aspects of day-to-day living that often remain out of sight. The Dimora series, part of a three part work Arena Industriale, initially commissioned for Storie Urbane in Reggio Emilia, illustrates Tallentire’s interest in transient experience and displacement in relation to specific social, geographic and political contexts.Born in Ireland, Anne Tallentire lives and works in London and is Professor of Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. This lively exhibition showcases selected works from this year’s University of Bath Student Photography Competition, organised by ICIA in association with Photosoc. ‘Next Stop' is the first solo exhibition in Britain by the internationally renowned Spanish artist, Jose Luis Puche. The artist's work, displayed in twelve large-scale figurative paintings in white and blue colors, explores the concept of materialism and how society is enslaved by possessions. Through his work Jose Luis Puche shows that modern-day society is no longer built on politics and morality but is driven by a need to consume. Jose Luis Puche states, "the people (in my paintings) are victims of their own ambitions and they depend on them, it is a vicious circle without an end."
